The Heidelberg English Book Club

There are two groups: a Thursday evening meeting and a Friday morning meeting. Each group meets roughly once a month and discusses different books. Some people only participate in one or the other, some people participate in both.

In the evening group, the meetings usually take place at a restaurant.

In the morning group we usually meet in a library or a cafe.

We have to limit the number of participants to about 12, because if the group is too big, it is hard to have a discussion. Plus we need to be able to make a table reservation ahead of time.

Waitlist:
Often, there are more people interested in attending, so we need some kind of a waitlist. Since Mobilizon does not have a waitlist feature, we have to improvise.

An event is created with a limited capacity (11 because the organizer does not count).

Once the event is full, “Participation approval” is switched on and the capacity is increased to 20. Then people can join the event, but they will not get approved. They are then on the waitlist.

If participants drop out, an organizer can approve the not yet approved participants in the order in which they joined.

We aim to cover a whole variety of genres as long as the book is fiction, under 300 pages, and generally accessible (the Friday morning group will sometimes read longer books).

Towards the end of the meeting, members can pitch books they would like to read and then we take a vote. Whatever book has the most votes becomes the book for the next month. This is also when we vote on the next meeting date.

We are very open to suggestions for future books 🙂

Technically no! You are free to come even if you haven’t read the book or started but didn’t finish.

(It’s even encouraged to not admit if you haven’t finished the book, and instead see how long you can get by before people notice you haven’t read the book.)

Of course, reading the book does help make the discussions better and there will be plot spoilers!
